To support himself, he peddled hand-painted postcards and T-Shirts. Basquiat was frequently homeless during this period and forced to sleep at friend’s apartments or on park benches. After ending their friendship in 1979 by declaring “SAMO IS DEAD", Basquiat along with Wayne Clifford, Vincent Gallo, Shannon Dawson, Michael Holman and Nick Taylor founded the music band Gray and became a regular of New York’s nightclubs such as Mudd Club and Club 57. Between 19 Jean-Michel and his friend Al Diaz spray painted graffiti on buildings in Lower Manhattan under the pseudonym SAMO. Having seen his mother committed to a mental institution when he was thirteen, Basquiat left his family home and took to the streets at age fifteen. This book and its anatomical images would prove to be amongst the most significant artistic influences in his short career.

While recovering from his injuries, he was given a copy of Gray’s Anatomy by his mother. Besides breaking his arm and suffering several internal injuries, he had to undergo splenectomy. Having been a keen athlete who competed in track events at his school, Jean-Michel was hit by a car whilst playing in the street at age seven. His mother encouraged him to draw and paint and instilled a love for art in her young son by enrolling him as a junior member of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and taking him to Manhattan museums as young boy.
